Garfield left the army to take a seat in Congress. He served for seventeen years and would become a Republican leader in the House. At the 1880 Republican Convention, after thirty-five ballots, Garfield emerged as his Party's compromise candidate. He squeaked into office in the general election. With no mandate, Garfield fretted about his term ahead. A struggle in his own Party over presidential appointments consumed his attention.
